Two CHRISTUS Spohn hospitals were ranked in Texas’ top 100 safest hospitals by the Dallas Morning News after a review of more than 300 Texas facilities. CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline was ranked eighth in the top 10 safest Texas hospitals, and CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial was ranked 87th out of the top 100 safest Texas hospitals.
CHRISTUS Spohn officials said they were pleased to learn of the study’s results, affirming the health system’s commitment to providing high-quality care. “It’s an honor to be named in the top 100 safest hospitals in Texas,” said CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Shoreline and Memorial COO/VP Xavier Villarreal. “We strive each day to provide a safe, compassionate environment for our patients to heal when they enter our doors.”
The newspaper published the investigative piece this summer entitled, “How Safe is Your Hospital?” The results of the piece are based on data released from 2011 and 2012 by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Using methodology and software developed by the federal government, the paper examined patient outcomes across a series of complications that medical researchers have deemed preventable.
It calculated the performance of the top 100 hospitals — those with the highest volume of patients — on each of those measures, known as patient safety indicators (PSIs), according to the article. The data comes as hospitals are newly required to report information on patients admitted with pre-existing complications and on infections acquired during a hospital admission, giving reporters a clear understanding of just how much Texas hospitals are meeting state patient safety requirements.
The study’s results are a reflection of CHRISTUS Spohn’s commitment to patient safety, according to Villarreal. “CHRISTUS Spohn Health System is dedicated to routinely looking for ways to improve patient safety and the level of care we provide,” Villarreal added. “This report affirms our confidence in the high-quality care that our nurses, physicians and clinicians deliver to South Texas patients.”
